Old school-New School

Old school vs new technologies

Companies that enter today the market of jewellery do it at a time of deep transition.

The world of jewelry manufacturing is going through a revolution.

Newcomers already see as normal the use of cad cam systems for the creation of the base models that will be used in making molds for the production of their collections.

They are well informed about the different types of printers, 3d modeling software and they are in definitive the “new generation” that emerges in a new era.

Meanwhile, traditional jewelry companies are approaching the inevitable change in a more timid way, since they are accustomed to the techniques of a bench jeweller that solve even the most complex models.

We consider that both type of companies have a very interesting travel ahead of them, with some commonalities. New companies should take into account that there is no technology that can replace the knowledge about traditional methods in jewelry: only an expert jeweller knows the true strength and stiffness of the different precious metals, only a professional, experienced jeweller can accurately predict when a wall thickness is too small.

They know by experience the best way to set a stone to looks in all its splendour. They see details such as which sectors could be textured or properly polished, and in which part of the production process it is more appropriate to do so.

In other words their knowledge encompass a wide range of techniques.

Only one who has worked with his hands for many years knows the true “soul” and behaviour of the materials.

Companies should start to use new technologies in order to improve both time and quality of their production, taking into account that, for example, it is much more complex for manual methods of elaboration to access a level of precision in the measures and thickness.

Although the expert jeweller has been able to perform such tasks with much talent during the last years, new technologies allow to do it in a more accurate, cheaper and faster way.

Complex organic models have always been a great challenge. We have seen bench jewellers making a piece in wax, totally by hand, of a very detailed and impressive tiger-shaped bracelet for no less than 10 days, today that time can be reduced easily by 70%, enabling a much lower cost of production than it would have been possible only 20 years ago.

Does this mean that new technologies replace the experience of traditional jewellery? The answer is no. New companies should take into account that it is impossible to carry out high quality jewelry collections if they do not have the support an experienced traditional jeweller, since only he and his experience can best decide how to obtain the greatest benefit from all these technological innovations.

We believe that the point of maximum optimization and profit will occur when both ways of approaching jewellery manufacturing intersect each other; the new school by understanding the importance of the evolution of hand-made manufacturing and its methods, and the more traditional school taking advantage of the possibilities that the 3d designers have to bring you.

It is only through continuous evolution, constant learning, and a true humble approach to reinvent oneself, regardless of whether you have 10 or 40 years of experience in the sector, that you can get as close as possible to creating what jewelry should be today more than ever, namely, a high quality artistic expression that pursues what every artist wants, and creates pieces with a beauty that inspires and excites.

At 3D Custom Jewel, we use three of the most advanced high quality 3D designing softwares. Also our team holds extensive background expertise as bench jewellers to craft the finest pieces of value in an “hybrid” way who take advantage of best of antique and modern technics.
